Working for Sample Supports has impacted my life in ways that I could have never imagined. When I started in the direct care position I was able to work directly with clients every day. From my first day I was in awe by the services that we provide and the impact that was made in individuals lives. The road may be long and the reward small but nothing is more satisfying than watching the growth that our direct care staff promote. We were able to work as a team to make sure that each individual was given the most consistent care to maximize the growth in the individual. I will never forget how much impact there is, when you see an individual conquer something that no one in the community thought was possible.
From there I moved onto become a residential specialist. In this position I worked with individuals in an independent living setting. I was given a caseload to care for throughout the week and we were able to build living skills to further independence. Many individuals needed various training to help them understand what it meant to live on their own. This was as simply as learning how to use the microwave to as complex as managing their own money and learning to drive. Much like direct care, it took long amounts of time to see individuals fully blossom. Many individuals learned various skills that they could use on their own without staff prompting. I enjoyed taking clients shopping and help them get the most “Bang for their Buck”. Some of the most exciting times in the residential setting were the community activities! It was so much fun to go to the recreation center with clients to take yoga, play racquetball, and lift weights. My journey through Sample Supports didn’t stop there!
Just recently I became the employment program manager at Samples World Bistro. This has been a very exciting transition! I am now helping find meaningful employment for individuals in a restaurant setting. It is really cool to see how well clients are able to adapt to a completely different environment. While working there I have tried to create new jobs within the restaurant to offer more opportunities to in need individuals in the community. Working in tangent with the Kitchen staff we have been able to create a new prep cook position. This has been a very rewarding position to create. Our employees will now have the ability to learn directly under a chef! It is exciting to see kitchen staff engage and teach individual in need with such compassion and enthusiasm. I look forward to the future and the opportunity to create an impact in the next individual’s life.
