I grew up never knowing exactly what I wanted to do. I decided on a major of Business Marketing and a minor in German after my freshman year of college. I thought I'd be traveling the world doing international marketing for some huge corporation, probably wearing fancy shoes.
I started my career in Human Services shortly after graduating and can't imagine doing anything else. For five years I was the director of a 16 bed intermediate care facility in Illinois for adults with Developmental Disabilities. I later grew into the Administrator role, still no fancy shoes needed. After working in group homes for seven years, I was astounded to find the residential options available in Colorado. While the staff and I did our best to make the most of the group living situation for the folks we served, it was difficult to personalize a shared bedroom and living space. It was difficult to personalize activities for 16 people while also maintaining the staffing ratio necessary.
With Sample Supports, I love being able to find the right personalized living situation for clients, providers, and families alike. I love what I do. I love that everyone has options. Services are personalized. Whether it's a Host Home, a Supported Apartment, or Family Caregiver Services, we tailor the living situation to make it work for the client. I often look back and wonder how the clients of the group home would have flourished if offered the opportunity of a host home or even their own apartment.
Working in Residential Services is a job that never "closes". There is no punching out and no shutting your phone off, because when does a home ever close? It doesn't, so we don't either. Finding the right home, with the right services and supports is worth it to me and why I love what I do.
