Every year, during the second week of September, organizations across the United States come together to celebrate and honor the dedicated professionals who provide essential care and support to individuals with disabilities. This week, known as Direct Support Professional (DSP) Appreciation Week, is a time to recognize the invaluable contributions of DSPs and to reflect on the critical role they play in our communities.
The History of DSP Appreciation Week DSP Appreciation Week has its roots in the broader movement to recognize and elevate the importance of direct care workers. In the early 2000s, as awareness grew about the essential role DSPs play in supporting individuals with disabilities, advocates began pushing for formal recognition. In 2008, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution designating the second week of September as National Direct Support Professional Recognition Week. Since then, this week has been celebrated annually, gaining momentum and participation from organizations, agencies, and communities across the country. The establishment of DSP Appreciation Week was more than just a symbolic gesture; it was a call to action to ensure that DSPs receive the respect, recognition, and compensation they deserve. It acknowledged the complexity and skill required to perform the duties of a DSP and aimed to elevate the profession within the broader health and human services field.
