Why Be a Host Home Provider?

There are many reasons to choose to open your home to an adult with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Maybe you are an empty nester and feel a bit lost without someone to take care of? Perhaps you are ready to give up the isolation of a 9-5 job for something that provides more flexibility and a meaningful connection? Or, you might have just realized that your skill set and personality type are perfectly matched for a caregiver position. There are a wide range of reasons people choose to become host home providers. Find out why being a host home provider might be a calling for you.

Make a Difference in Someone’s Life

It is rare in life that we have an opportunity to directly and consistently have a positive effect on another individual. As a host home provider, you will have a positive effect on another’s life every day. By opening your home to an individual with intellectual and developmental disabilities, you have the power to change that person’s life for the better.

Host Home Providers help individuals gain independence and empowerment in their lives. You can provide companionship and encouragement to a fellow human being as he or she becomes part of the community. The creation of an intimate connection found in this type of service is like no other, and can’t help but leave a lasting impact on you both.

Earn Income Doing Something Meaningful and Enjoyable

By becoming a host home provider, you will receive competitive stipends ranging from $1,500-$5000 per month (tax free) to provide care to individual(s) in your home. The home that you created and are proud of will be shared and appreciated by another person. You might even gain a new garden helper, board game opponent, or fellow lover of that one dish you make that no one else eats! Check out this quick video to hear an anecdote from one of our veterans here at Sample Supports: https://youtu.be/JRFYunfU4Xs

Provide a Service to the Community

While helping clean up the local park, writing for the neighborhood newsletter, or campaigning for your local government are all great ways to give back to the community, there wouldn’t be a community without the human beings that comprise it. There are many members of our community that require hands-on care, have higher risk behavior, and/or precise medical needs. These individuals are vital to the success of our communities and might need a little extra support from the rest of us. They need safe, stable, loving environments in order to flourish and be active members of society.

“There’s an expression that states, ‘It’s better to teach people to fish than to just give them a fish.’ When we assist people with disabilities in such a way as to help them sustain their independence, we create a happier, more connected and productive society.” states, Dr. Larry Berkelhammer of The Mindful Word. We need to foster and encourage these individuals so that their positive impact can be far reaching and deeply felt by all.
